It's time for bonfires, pumpkin carving and trips to the mountains. Fall is my favorite season. The weather is crisp and refreshing, the colors are beautiful and there are so many fun things to do!

The Blue Ridge Mountains are a popular destination during the Fall months, especially when the leaves are at their most colorful. I am planning to take a train ride through the mountains in October, but I know there are many other ways to experience the beauty of Fall. I would love to hear suggestions about great Fall destinations in the Southeast. The one experience that stands out above all others is my visit to Blackbeard Island.

Blackbeard is a wildlife refuge and is only accessible by boat. The island remains undeveloped by man--it is beautiful and wildly pristine. When the tide is out, the beach seems to stretch out for miles. Crabs, starfish and birds are abundant; alligators, bald eagles and sea turtles have been known to make an appearance. A visit to the island is refreshing, relaxing and filled with unique experiences. If you ever find yourself near the Georgia Coast, I highly recommend a visit to Blackbeard Island!

Additional information can be found on the Fish & Wildlife Service website.

Road Trips

One of the best things about road trips is their inherent unpredictability. Every stop does not have to be planned and detours are perfectly acceptable. Nothing compares to getting in the car in the morning with a destination in mind, but no set arrival time.

For example, a recent trip to Florida took my family and I through a series of stops off of I-95. We started in Savannah, where we toured the River Front and took a slight detour to Tybee Island. From there, we hit St. Simon's Island, drove through historic St. Marys, and visited Amelia Island before heading to our final destination: St. Augustine, FL.

It was quite a road trip! And I was thrilled to spend time in St. Augustine--it is quickly becoming one of my favorite vacation spots. The city is filled with history and has something for everyone, from adventure to great cultural experiences to relaxation!

Traveling Local

In the past few years I have traveled to Hawaii, Seattle, San Jose, New York, San Francisco, Madrid and Guadalajara - and each vacation involved a trip to the airport, the high cost of an airline ticket and lots of vacation days.
